Subwoofer audio or woofer is able to reproduce the low frequencies. It is made up of some 'woofers' in a well package, includes loudspeaker tube enclosure, bass reflex, infinite baffle, and horn-loaded in a band pass system. Subwoofer is added in your audio system because it can make a high level sound of low bass. The early models of subwoofer are specially made for home audio system. But now, these products are not only used for home audio system, but also customs car audio installations. It becomes so popular because the latest products are able to reproduce loud sound but in low frequency.

There are two kinds of subwoofer, passive and active subwoofer. Passive subwoofer is an audio speaker which consists of a subwoofer driver and powered by an external amplifier while an active subwoofer is powered by a built-in amplifier. Using a passive subwoofer will add flexibility for the user because we can choose the type of amplifier or features. Here, amplifier has a function to handle the efficient power of a speaker driver. It is used to increase the efficiency of the driver.

Subwoofer audio requires strong internal cross bracing to add strength and reduce box resonances. A subwoofer has usual frequency range between 20-200 Hz. All subwoofers placed in the same enclosure will work together to produce lower frequency extension. For example, if a subwoofer enclosure can go down to 40 Hz, a larger enclosure consists of four 'woofers' may be able to go to 30 Hz. They can make lower frequency than the usual. Subwoofer output level can be increased by increasing cone excursion. But be careful in choosing the excursion because the high excursion at high power levels tends to produce more distortion.

The smallest subwoofer is designed in a small size and it is really suitable to be put in your home theater because it doesn't need more space. The largest subwoofer enclosures are usually used for concert or nightclub sound systems, which needs louder sound and produces greater efficiency.

Because the sound produced and low frequencies are difficult to localized, many stereo and audio systems feature only one subwoofer channel. Subwoofer does not provide superior bass performance in comparison to large loudspeakers. It can only be placed off-center without affecting the perceived sound stage. The intention of a subwoofer is often augmented by the existing speaker to save it from low frequencies at high levels. Subwoofers may be purchased separately, includes the satellite speakers. It can be sold individually usually include crossover circuitry to assist integration into an existing system. Top quality with great portability subwoofer and home audio speaker can be more expensive.

Some conventional subwoofer or speaker systems are built in the same cabinet as a unit. They can be placed in the corner inside your room. It's better to put subwoofer unit far from large room openings but near to the listener. This position is suggested because the low bass frequencies have a long wavelength. Besides, there is little difference between a listener's left and right ears in ability to reach the sound.
