Choosing the best speakers for your home theater system can be a daunting task. What makes speakers differ from one another enough to justify large price gaps, and what kind of speakers will be best for your home theater? There are many things to consider when purchasing a set of speakers for your home theater and with a little education on the matter you should be in a much better position to decide exactly what will work best for you.
If you go to your local mega retail store than you will likely find audio systems ranging from around $100 to around $1000. Perhaps this has left you wondering just what justifies that large of a price gap. You would however likely be better served by purchasing your receiver apart from your speakers. When you purchase your speakers you will first need to pair them with the optimal receiver. You want to make sure that you are getting the right setup for your situation. If your home theater is in a very small room then you will not likely need massive speaker towers and the highest wattage receiver on the market, so before you decide on your speakers you should decide on which receiver will best suit your needs. One you have the proper receiver then it will be time to pick your speakers. Again you will likely want to find speakers that fit the room in question. Of course you are free to go the overkill route if you desire, but you will likely want to find a balance between cost and size/features for your theater. Once you have decided upon a price range then the first, and perhaps best, way to decide upon the speakers you want is to simply listen. Many audiophiles seem to think that the subjective act of listening is the best way to decide which speakers will be best for you. Listen for the difference between instrument types and the clarity of individual overlapping music lines. Listen for the depth and clarity of bass. There are certain songs that I can listen to with a cheap pair of speakers where certain bass notes are almost inaudible and since deep bass can add a great deal to your home theater you should certainly take this into consideration.
One thing to keep in mind is that cheap speakers usually include cheap speaker drivers which will adversely affect the quality of your home theater audio. If you want great sounding speakers you will likely have to spend a bit more to get what you want, but remember that you don't have to buy speakers everyday and it is best to go with a quality item that you won't want to replace anytime soon.
