Putting together a home stereo-what components do I need?
Question:
I want to put together a home stereo (not for the TV!) to listen to music and have picked out the speakers I want. However, I was planning on buying a standard receiver with tuner and a separate kick-butt CD player, however the place that I am ordering my speakers from also makes an amp. I was planning on purchasing this as well, but do I need to? And if I do, do I need a preamp as well? Then, if I need bother with both, will I just need a tuner for the readio? Thanks!
Answer: A stereo system can be assemble several different ways.
Simplest is a Receiver which includes a amp, preamp and tuner all in one piece. Older vintage receivers can support turntables, tape decks (cassettes or reel to reel) as well as CD players wired through their AUX input.
Next is an integrated amp. This includes the amplifier, preamplifier but no built in tuner. A separate tuner can be hooked up to it as well as the components listed above.
Last is a full separate component system. This is where one has a amplifier, a separate preamp and a separate tuner. It will also support all the inputs listed above.
Your speaker selection is the most important component to how well your system will sound and should be the largest investment of the total system.
There is a large amount of vintage hi-fi equipment sold on E-bay. The 1970s equipment is the most popular era and great buys can be found there if you don't require the most popular top of the line models. But again the speakers will be the most important decision.
There is a great audio hobby site at audiokarma.org with many different forums and many helpful people that will be happy to answer any questions. Hi-Fi does not have to be expensive but it does pay to ask and research before writing checks ;-)
