Designing your viewing environment can affect your enjoyment of your home cinema as much as your choice of projector and screen. The best projector in the world will never be viewed at its best unless the home cinema viewing environment is also designed. Integrating curtains and blinds in to a mood lighting control system can ensure curtains close when required. Our lighting keypads contain ambient light sensors enabling us to close blinds if lighting levels are higher than optimum. In an ideal environment room lighting should be no more than 10% of the brightest white available through the display.
Back lighting the screen can reduce fatigue during extended viewing periods. It ensures dramatic changes in brightness between scenes do not tire the eye, causing fatigue. This back light should be closer to the blue end of the spectrum (normal incandescent lighting is too red and will therefore make skin tones appear washed out). Back lighting also helps the perception of blacks enabling screens which struggle to portray deep blacks.
Even elements such as colours in the room can impact how images are viewed - watching films against different coloured backdrops has a huge affect on colour perception and brightness. In general a neutral colour scheme should be displayed around the viewing area and should have a matt finish to minimise reflections.
Viewing angle also plays a huge part in viewing comfort, the fashion recently has been to mount LCD and Plasma displays above fireplaces, the viewing angle should be no more than %2B/- 15% - any more and fatigue will quickly set in. It is also worth bearing in mind that the further of axis the viewer strays the worse the picture may become - LCD screens in particular should be watched closely on axis whilst projectors and plasma displays are more forgiving.
Viewing distance is also important, our high definition installations allow the user to enjoy a great home cinema experience from about 3 times the height of the screen. As we install custom home cinema seating we can ensure viewing distance is correct and the screen is set to the correct height.
