As I said, Sonos can stream music into any room of your house. It gets music from 4 different places, which are controlled by a Sonos Controller, an iPod Touch/iPhone, or a computer. As far as I know, apart from a pretty nifty Android App there is no other remote control that can control it.
Firstly it plays music that is stored on your computer. We probably all have music on our computers, but most of us only play it through an MP3 player, which is a waste of music as far as I'm concerned. You spend a lot of time at home but it is impractical to wear an MP3 player all the time so why not release the music from your computer? It will play ripped CD's that have been ripped into a computer or laptop and it will play music that you purchase from online music services. Whatever the case the Sonos system only has to have a normal Local Area Network connection to wirelessly connect to the computer(s) where the music is stored.
Next Sonos can play internet radio. These days most radio stations have an online presence so there are many to choose from. There are internet radio stations all over the world and they can all be found on Sonos. Radio stations can be searched for by name, locality, music, talk and sports genres. Even presenters and shows can be searched for so you will always find something interesting. Sonos report to have 100,000 internet radio stations available.
Next Sonos has an analogue connection available. This means it can be connected to anything from a television to a satellite receiver or an MP3 player. Connecting Sonos to a video source does have a slight limitation because there is a small audio delay from the line in sockets and so the voice is delayed. However being able to have a local connection in each room does allow you to connect the line in socket to an Ipod or similar portable device, giving individuals access to home audio and their own music collection.
Lastly, Sonos allows you to subscribe to online music providers and stream the song of your choice, anytime, to any room of your house. Now that is the best part! For a small fee every month, you can have access to around 10,000,000 (ten million) tracks. There are a few providers but the two biggest ones both claim around that amount. Again these tracks are all searchable in many ways. All of these tracks can now be made into playlists and repeated whenever you like. Sonos can even wake you up in the morning with a playlist or a radio station, or switch on radio shows when they are about to start.
As far as installation goes, a Sonos unit can be placed in the room or totally hidden away. One advantage of having the Sonos unit in the room is that you can easily access the line in socket and simple controls like volume and mute. If you do hide it away and need access to the line in socket then this can be wired to a connection point somewhere in the room. All you need then are a pair of speakers or a home cinema system with speakers to connect it to.
Speakers come in many different shapes and forms like bookshelf speakers, in ceiling speakers, wall mounted speakers and home theatre speakers and subwoofers. Sonos can connect to any of these so its up to you to fit the best speakers that work with the design of your room or budget.
