With the advent of 7.1, 9.1, and 11.1 in home theatre sound they have created quite a problem. Adding all these extra speakers could make for an incredible night of entertainment; but it could also take away from your enjoyment. The wide and height speakers actually create a problem, the speakers are actually at different distances from you to each other. In other words the wide speakers are going to be closer to you then the fronts and the heights are going to be the furthest away from you. Audyssey saw this problem and came up with a solution and called it the MultEQ.
Auto room calibration has been around home theatre sound for decades and nobody has seemed to get it right usually leaving the user, upset and not using it. What they have done at Audyssey is to create an eq for the frequencies and also for time. With Audyssey MultEQ you set it - the mic - in the middle of the room and as you sit quietly it sends pings to the speakers and calibrates the way the room reacts to the pings.
It will also test from different areas of the room, this is what the old time auto eq's were missing, generally they would sound o.k. from one area of the room then the other areas sounded awful, hense user not using it. Now with the newest MultEQ XT32 with it's thousands of control points has got the capability to hear your room from almost every sitting position. Which is going to put your home theatre experience through the roof, and all friends will want to know how you did it.
MultEQ comes with most of the newer, mid to upper end receivers. So, in your search for a new receiver make sure it has at the bare minimum the MultEQ. The MultEQ XT32 has the thousands of control points for a better more refined home theatre sound.
