Mostly everyone loves listening to music while inside the house doing chores or some other things. We usually put all our music in our iPods or computers. It's really not that great doing chores wearing earbuds or headphones. If we don't wear an ear piece, we can't hear the music when outside our rooms.
Many people face this kind of challenge everyday. One way of getting through this is to install speakers all over the house, which involves a lot of work-because you have to feed wires from your radio or music player to all of the speakers-and it is quite costly.
A better solution to this is to make the music travel wirelessly inside the house. This simply needs the use of an FM transmitter, a device plugged into your video or audio player to allow the sound to be broadcast as an FM radio signal that can be picked up using a receiver, like a radio.
An FM transmitter can easily solve the dilemma of having music in every room of your home. Unfortunately, most transmitters have a very short range: about 9 meters. This kind of signal is not strong enough to be picked up by average radios, which means that you really have to look for an powerful FM transmitter that can cover your whole house. You may also want to look for a transmitter made especially to transmit for a whole house rather than just a regular one. Also, you may want your FM transmitter to be stereo. For good sound quality, get stereo FM radios, which are cheap and can be easily installed.
Setting up a whole house FM transmitter
Attach the FM Transmitter to your radio source (CD Player, computer, iPod) using one of the audio cables provided (either Stereo RCA jack or the Stereo Headphone Jack). Then, search for an unused FM station in your area. Do not mind if there is static from other stations. Set your stereo transmitter to the FM station you found (using the transmitter's side switches). To start broadcasting, switch the transmitter on by pressing the front switch. Adjust the FM radios in your house to the signal you are using. You are now good to go. It is that simple.
A whole house FM transmitter does not use lot of electricity. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't consume one dollar worth of electricity even if it is turned on all year. All whole house transmitters come with antennas. Experiment with the position of the antenna to know which spot gives you the best range.
Transmitting your music through FM is like making your own FM radio station. And the best part is that you can play any kind of music you like.
Some popular whole house transmitters are the Crane FMT Digital FM transmitter, iRiver, Whole House and Mobile Black Box. They can be purchased at computer and electronic stores.
