This year, high definition television sets have made it to the top of many people's holiday wish lists. These TVs play a key role in building the ultimate home entertainment system and are a rather large investment. Therefore, the process of picking one out should not be rushed. You want to be sure that the high def set you select is affordable while meeting all your criteria. There are essentially three different types worth considering. These are plasma, DLP, and LCD, and each comes with its own set of pros and cons. It should be noted that one that is ultimately the right choice for you will not necessarily be the same one that is right for your best friend or neighbor. There is a certain amount of subjectivity that goes into determining what is the "best" TV for any given person. The following descriptions should give you a clearer idea of what the differences are between the various types of HDTVs and help make your choice an easier one.
1. Plasma. Plasma television sets are generally known for their excellent picture quality and affordable price tags. If blur-free motion and color contrast are at the top of your list of criteria, but you do not have a lot of money to spend, then these high definition sets are likely to be the best choice for you. You may be aware of the fact that older plasma televisions tended to have relatively short lifespans and problems with burn-in, but you can rest assured that these issues and others have been resolved in the newer models being sold nowadays. The major downside to these types of televisions is the fact that they use more energy than others, so depending on how much TV you watch, you may make up for the lower price tag in skyrocketing electricity bills. They are also pretty heavy, so if you are going to be hanging yours on a wall, make sure that you use a sturdy mount.
2. DLP. If a giant screen is at the top of your list of criteria, then DLP may be the way to go. For the same amount of money that you would pay for a plasma television or an LCD set, you can get a DLP model with a much larger screen. You might, for example, spend just over two thousand dollars on a DLP set with a 73 inch screen. If you are in the market for one of these huge HD televisions, be sure to choose one with rear projection in order to get the best contrast possible. Also worth consideration are the LED backlit models, which are known to last a long time. The biggest disadvantage of DLP sets is that you basically have to watch them straight on, as the images are not good when viewed from extreme angles.
3. LCD. Though they tend to be more expensive than other high definition televisions, LCD sets are perfect if you are looking for a thin, light TV. These are especially good options if you are interested in a HD screen that is less than 50 inches.
